Stop your own pages competing for the same search

1 hrImpact: mediumEffort: medium

Find searches where two or more of your pages take turns appearing, and combine them into one stronger page.

When Google can’t tell which of your pages is the answer, it swaps between them and neither ranks well. One clear page usually ranks better than two half-pages.

How to do it

  1. 1
    Find the clashes
In Search Console, click a query and open the Pages tab. More than one of your pages listed for one search is a clash. Your one-phrase-per-page list helps too.
  2. 2
    Pick the stronger page
The one with more clicks, more links pointing to it, or the better address.
  3. 3
    Merge the useful parts
Move anything valuable from the weaker page into the stronger one.
  4. 4
    Redirect the weaker page
Send its address to the stronger page with a permanent (301) redirect and update your own links.

Common mistakes

How you will know it is done

Each important search has one clear page, and the old duplicates redirect to it.
