Do keyword research and build a target keyword map

3-5 hrImpact: criticalEffort: medium

A keyword map assigns each real target keyword to exactly one specific page on your site, built from actual keyword research rather than guessing — the foundational document that everything else in your content strategy references back to.

Without this, content gets created reactively and pages end up competing with each other for the same keyword, or worse, no page on your site targets a keyword real customers are actually searching for.

How to do it

  1. 1
Research real search terms for your business
Use a keyword tool to find actual search volume and variations for your core services, not just terms you assume people use.
  2. 2
    Group related keywords together
Several similar terms usually belong to the same page rather than each needing its own.
  3. 3
Assign one keyword group per page
Map each group to an existing page, or note that a new page needs to be created for it.
  4. 4
    Flag genuine gaps
Keywords with real search volume that no current page targets are your content priority list.

Common mistakes

How you will know it is done
