Claim and verify Google Business Profile

15 minutes to claim; verification can take a few days. Impact: critical Effort: low

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the free listing that shows up in Google Maps and the local results box when people search for businesses like yours. Claiming it means proving to Google you own the business so you control what it says.

This is the single highest-impact thing a local business can do. An unclaimed profile means Google shows whatever it scraped — wrong hours, no photos — and you can't fix it. Claim it and you own the most valuable real estate in local search.

How to do it

  1. 1
Search for your business on Google
Search your business name. If a profile exists, look for 'Claim this business' or 'Own this business?'. If nothing exists, you'll create one next.
  2. 2
Go to the Business Profile manager
Open the official site and sign in with the Google account you want to own this long-term (ideally a business account, not a personal Gmail you might lose).
  3. 3
    Enter your exact business details
Name, category, and address (or service area if you go to customers). Use your real business name exactly as it appears on your storefront and website — this exact spelling matters for citation consistency later.
  4. 4
Choose a verification method and complete it
Google offers postcard, phone, email, or video verification depending on your business. Pick what it offers and finish it — your profile isn't live or editable until verification completes.
