Audit: Search your brand in ChatGPT and Perplexity

30 minImpact: criticalEffort: low

This is a direct audit — actually asking ChatGPT and Perplexity what they know about your brand, right now, in your own words, to see exactly how (or whether) these systems currently represent you.

You cannot fix what you have not measured — before doing any AI-visibility work, you need a real baseline of what these systems currently say, so you can tell later whether your efforts actually moved the needle.

The full picture

This audit exists because most businesses have never actually looked at what AI systems say about them, and that gap between assumption and reality is often significant. Unlike traditional search, where you can directly influence what appears through structured optimization, AI-generated answers are synthesized from whatever training data and retrieval sources the model draws on — meaning the current state is often a mix of accurate information, outdated facts, and occasional confusion with similarly-named businesses, none of which you'll know about until you actually check.

The reason ChatGPT and Perplexity specifically matter as a starting pair is that they represent genuinely different underlying approaches. ChatGPT's answers about your business draw substantially from training data with a knowledge cutoff, meaning very recent changes to your business may not be reflected at all. Perplexity performs live retrieval and cites real, current sources, meaning its answer reflects whatever it finds right now, for better or worse. Checking both gives you a picture of both your historical digital footprint and your current one.

The value of documenting this baseline goes beyond the initial discovery. Every subsequent AI-visibility mission — building structured data, publishing definitive content, getting cited by others — is fundamentally trying to move these answers in a specific direction. Without a real baseline captured before that work begins, there's no way to actually verify any of it worked; you're left guessing whether things improved based on vague impression rather than a genuine before-and-after comparison.

The realistic finding for most businesses running this audit for the first time is some combination of accurate-but-thin information, a few outdated facts, and possibly confusion with a similarly named entity. None of these are cause for alarm — they're simply the starting conditions the rest of this work is designed to improve, and knowing the specific starting conditions is what makes the rest of the strategy targeted rather than a shot in the dark.

How to do it

  1. 1
Ask ChatGPT directly about your business
What is [business name], what does it do, where is it located — note exactly what comes back.
  2. 2
    Ask Perplexity the same questions
Perplexity cites live sources, so also note which sites it pulled from.
  3. 3
    Document the gaps and inaccuracies
Wrong details, missing information, or confusion with a similarly-named business.
  4. 4
    Save this as your baseline
Re-run the same questions after completing other AI-visibility missions to measure real change.
