Get brand mentioned in 2 external sources

20–30 minutes to write and refine. Impact: high Effort: medium

Backlinks are links from other sites to yours; brand mentions are references to your business elsewhere (linked or not). Together they're the web's votes of confidence — signals that others consider you credible. Earning them legitimately is hard but powerful.

Backlinks remain one of Google's strongest ranking factors — a few from relevant, trusted sites can move competitive terms. Mentions build your entity authority and feed AI engines. But bought or spammy links trigger penalties; the only durable path is earning them.

How to do it

  1. 1
This is your getting 2 external brand mentions.
Brand mentions build entity authority even when unlinked, and feed AI engines.
  2. 2
Start with the links you can simply ask for
The easiest legitimate links: directories, suppliers/partners/associations you work with, and any organization you're a member of. Ask them to add you to their partner/member page. These are low-effort and real.
  3. 3
Create something genuinely worth linking to
The sustainable engine: a free tool, a useful guide, original data, a calculator. People link to resources that help their own readers. This earns links passively, forever.
  4. 4
    Pursue unlinked mentions and PR
Find places that mention your business without linking (Google your brand name) and politely ask for the link. For bigger reach, pitch journalists/bloggers a genuine story angle (HARO / Connectively, local press).
  5. 5
Never buy links or use schemes
Bought links, link farms, and PBNs are the fastest route to a Google penalty that can erase your rankings. If a service offers '500 backlinks for $50', run. Earned beats bought, every time.
  6. 6
What matters most on THIS platform
Get your business name out where your audience and Google will see it: a local news feature, a podcast guest spot, an industry roundup, a partner's case study. Linked is better, but even unlinked mentions strengthen your brand entity in Google's eyes.

Common mistakes

How you'll know it's done

You've earned at least one relevant, real backlink from a legitimate site (not bought), and/or converted an unlinked brand mention into a link — with a repeatable plan (a linkable asset or outreach angle) for earning more.
