Build a topic cluster around your highest-value keyword

Planning 1–2 hours; writing is ongoing, structure is set up-front. Impact: critical Effort: high

A topic cluster is one comprehensive 'pillar' page on a broad topic, surrounded by detailed 'cluster' pages on sub-topics, all interlinked. Instead of scattered posts, you build an interconnected web that signals deep authority on a subject.

Google rewards demonstrated topical authority, not isolated topics. A cluster is the structural proof of it — it lifts every page in the group, captures specific and descriptive searches, and is exactly what AI answer engines pull from. This is how you become the authority on X.

How to do it

  1. 1
    Pick your highest-value topic
The broad subject most central to your business and most valuable to rank for. This becomes your pillar.
  2. 2
    Map the cluster
Use your Google Search Console queries (or just search Google) to find the sub-topics and questions around it. Each becomes one cluster page — aim for 5–10 to start.
  3. 3
    Build the pillar page
A comprehensive, well-structured overview of the whole topic that introduces each sub-topic and links DOWN to its detailed cluster page.
  4. 4
    Write clusters and interlink
Each cluster page goes deep on one sub-topic and links back UP to the pillar (and sideways where relevant). This bidirectional linking is what makes Google see a unified, authoritative body of work.

One pillar and 5+ cluster pages, all bidirectionally interlinked with descriptive anchors, each adding real depth — a crawlable web of authority on your core topic.
