Create and submit an XML sitemap

30 min Impact: high ✓ Manual completion — a permanent stone

Creating and submitting an XML sitemap gives Google a direct, complete list of every page you want indexed, submitted proactively through Search Console rather than waiting for organic discovery — foundational technical SEO that many otherwise-solid sites still skip or let go stale.

Without an actively submitted sitemap, Google has to find your pages purely by following links, which is slower and can miss pages with few internal links pointing to them.

How to do it

  1. 1
    Generate a sitemap
Most CMSs generate this automatically — confirm yours is enabled and actually current.
  2. 2
    Publish at the standard location
    yoursite.com/sitemap.xml.
  3. 3
Submit it directly in Google Search Console
Under Sitemaps, add the URL — this actively requests Google check it, rather than passive discovery.
  4. 4
Confirm it's accepted with no errors
Search Console will show parsing status and any excluded URLs.

Common mistakes

How you will know it is done
